Post-Cyberpunk + Gods & Monsters

RYUJIN · 191
蒼血竜神. The azure-blooded dragon god. 蒼 is not the blue of open water. It is the blue of a face that has stopped receiving oxygen.
Ryūjin held the sea. He kept a palace on the floor of it and two jewels, one to raise the tide and one to lower it, and every sailor who ever put out understood that the water was somebody's ceiling.
Then someone built one.
191 is neither armour nor vehicle. It was grown. The exterior is muscle and it is unshielded, because nothing on the surface is worth protecting that the surface cannot regrow. What moves through it is not red. Copper carries the oxygen here, as it does in the older animals, the ones that were in the water long before anything had a spine. Oxygenated, it runs blue. The organ at the crown is where that exchange happens. It is the only component that has never been successfully cut.
There is a pilot.
The pilot does not sit above it, or behind it, or at any remove from it whatsoever. The cockpit is the mouth. Access is by the throat. The neural coupling is total rather than partial, which the specification describes as the elegant solution, and every pilot since has been recruited on the clear understanding that coupling is not a reversible procedure.
The warning plate lists the intruder countermeasures at considerable length.
It does not describe how the pilot is removed.
designer's notes
The whole piece rests on one refusal. Mecha default to hard surface: panel lines, greebles, bevelled edges, visible fasteners. I built this entirely as soft body. No panel breaks, no hatches, nothing that reads as assembled. If a giant machine can be grown, it should not look like it was bolted.
The circuitry is drawn on, not modelled. Flat white line sitting on the surface rather than recessed into it. That single choice changes what the technology means. Modelled circuitry reads as engineering. Applied line reads as marking, closer to a tattoo or a brand or a quarantine notice. It looks like the tech was put onto the creature rather than built into it.
Colour is a straight opposition, crimson against teal. The important part is that teal appears exactly once on the object itself, at the crown organ. Everywhere else the teal is background. So the organ reads as a piece of the outside world sitting inside the body, which is what a blood-oxygen system actually is.
There are no eyes. The mass reads as a head through proportion alone. Removing eyes removes your ability to tell where it is looking, and that is most of the discomfort.
The pilot cavity is the only element at human scale. Take it away and the object has no size at all. It is the sole reason you read this as enormous rather than as a small ugly thing photographed closely.
The unease is not gore. It is smoothness. Nothing is torn, nothing is worn, there are no seams and nothing to grip. It has never been damaged and it has never been repaired.
