TEMPLE OF MASKS ยท HERA

A god at true scale cannot enter a room built by anybody else.

This is the practical problem the hymns leave out. The regalia has to be kept somewhere between wearings, and the somewhere has to be built to the wearer rather than the visitor. So the temples were raised at divine measure. The columns are the correct height. The ceiling closes at the correct distance. Every proportion in the hall is right, and only the guest is the wrong size.

This one holds Hera's.

The chains along the walls are not ornament, and they are not new.

He hung her from the upper air once. Gold at the wrists, anvils at the ankles, suspended where there is nothing to push against, and she stayed there until the objections ran out. She was brought down. She was restored. She was crowned again, and the marriage continued, and it was never discussed.

The chains were not melted down. Someone decided to keep them. Someone decided where they would hang. In three thousand years Hera has not once asked for them to be taken away.

Above the plinth the crown floats against an opening onto deep space, iridescent, still faintly warm at the temple where a head would sit. It is the most closely watched object in the building.

The chains are the second.

designer's notes

The only piece in the range where the mask is not worn. That changes the discipline entirely: this is an architectural composition, and I approached it as one.

Strict one-point perspective with a central vanishing point. It is the most formal camera available and it is how you photograph a cathedral. It removes the viewer's agency. You cannot look around this space, you can only proceed down it, which is what a processional interior is for.

Scale is carried entirely by repetition. There is no human figure in frame, so the receding column rhythm does all the size work. Take away three columns and the room shrinks.

The mirrored floor doubles the apparent height. It is the cheapest available method for making an interior feel unbounded, and it is also why the ceiling can be read as a continuation rather than a lid.

Chrome on chrome throughout means the image has almost no local colour. That is what makes the iridescence on the mask the only chromatic event in the frame, and why it holds attention without being large.

The portal is the sole non-architectural element and the only depth beyond the room. It sits directly behind the object, so the crown is positioned between the viewer and the void. That placement is the whole composition.

The chains are peripheral and in shadow deliberately. You find them second, after the crown. Anything found second reads as evidence rather than as subject.
