RED DEATH

The character on its face is 殺. It means to kill. It is not a name or a rank or a threat. It is a category marking, in the way a shipping container is stencilled with what is inside.

Beneath it: 85.

The figure is not a tally of work completed. It is a declaration of what remains. Red Death was manufactured with a finite number of executions sealed inside it at the foundry, unamendable, and every contract fulfilled reduces the figure by one. The arrow above the character points downward for that reason. It is not ornament. It is a direction of travel.

This is why the fee has never been fixed and has never been negotiable. The earliest clients paid very little. The number was high then.

It does not sleep. It does not require payment in advance. It has never failed to arrive. It cannot be redirected once commissioned, cannot be recalled, and does not accept clarification.

The mane is not hair. Each quill is a discharged contract, extruded from the frame and left where it emerged, and it is the only record Red Death keeps. Count them if you can get near enough.

Nobody has.

The core at the chest remains lit while the figure stands above zero.

Nobody has established what it was built to do afterwards.

designer's notes

Two colours and no environment. A flat red field with a black object on it, no gradient, no depth cue, nothing behind. It is the boldest decision in the range and it is why this piece reads as an icon or a hazard marking rather than as a render.

Everything else in the range sits in a space. This one refuses space entirely, which is what gives it poster force and, i suspect, why it is the most liked.

Absolute bilateral mirror with no deviation anywhere. Heraldic rather than organic. Nothing about it suggests it has ever moved.

The quill mane is the load-bearing detail. Thousands of thin elements sitting between large smooth masses, a high-frequency band between two low-frequency ones. That contrast of density is what stops the silhouette becoming a blob, and it is the only place in the piece where the eye can rest on complexity.

The eye slits are the one place the background colour appears on the object, so they read as light arriving from behind rather than as surface. Cheap effect, works every time.

The chest sphere is the only soft-edged element in an image built entirely from hard edges. Everything is either razor or gloss except that one glowing mass.

Typography is three marks on the centre axis: one character, one number, one arrow. Fewer marks read as more authority. Any additional text would have made it decorative.

Authoritative record

The details above constitute the authoritative record for this piece, produced and certified by SYARAWI®. The physical certificate accompanying it is a pointer to this record. Where the two differ, this record governs.
