ICHOR . 184

They wrote that the blood of the gods ran gold. They wrote it from a distance, and from stories, and from the assumption that a divine thing must be beautiful.

It is gold only while it is inside.

When the guardian fell, it did not stop. Divine matter carries no instruction to clot. It ran out along the coastline for a season, and then for a century, cooling as it travelled, taking the shape of every ribcage and every root it crossed. When it finally set, it had made a head.

Not a helmet. A head. There is a difference, and it matters a great deal to whoever is inside it.

The eyes went under first. Whatever replaced them has no need of light, which is why ICHOR is worn by watchers rather than seers. The mouth was left open to the air. This is either mercy or method. From the centre of the lower lip a single seam runs down to the chin, the only breach in the entire surface, and it has never fully closed.

The wearer is warm. The plating is warmer.

Those who wear ICHOR insist the bleeding stopped a long time ago.

The seam disagrees.

designer's notes

One material, one object. The entire form is a single black gloss with no secondary material anywhere, which is a harder constraint than it sounds. Most biomechanical work relies on material contrast to separate parts. Here everything is the same substance, so separation has to come from form alone.

Gloss is doing the work detail usually does. On a black surface at high specular, you do not read shape from local colour, you read it from where the highlight breaks. That is why the object appears wet. It is not a wetness texture, it is a lighting decision, and it means the form is legible in near darkness where a matte version would collapse into silhouette.

The only human element is the mouth. Everything above the lip is taken. That crop is the entire argument of the composition, and it is the reason the piece reads as invasive rather than as a costume. A visible eye would have made it a portrait of someone wearing something.

Strict bilateral mirror. Mirroring is what produces the density in biomechanical form, and it also pushes the piece toward the heraldic, closer to a crest or a coat of arms than to a creature.

One saturated mark in the whole image, the red seam under the lip. It sits on the only warm surface, and it pulls the eye to the one part still alive. Everything else in the frame is refusing to give you information.

No scale reference anywhere. This could be a helmet or it could be four storeys tall. That ambiguity is deliberate and it is the reason the piece works at both print sizes.
